Archives Internship – Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum (Sedalia, NC)

The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum is seeking applicants for an internship beginning in the Summer 2012 Session. This is a prime internship opportunity for MLIS students or recent graduates seeking hands-on experience with processing manuscript collections and developing archival finding aids.

The intern will primarily work under the supervision of the Museum Historian and will develop specific projects in conjunction with his/her supervisor.

Candidates should be familiar with and willing to provide the following steps in archival arrangement and description:
-identifying original order
-establishing context for arrangement/description
-arranging, processing, and describing the records
-creating finding aids
-encoding/digitizing finding aids (preferred)
-develop physical or digital exhibits (eventually)
-ability to lift & pack archival boxes

The Museum is willing to provide course credit for students seeking a practicum or independent study.  Candidates should also be willing to periodically assist the museum in supervising extremely large tours and outreach activities.

Charlotte Hawkins Brown was an African American educator and activist.  She founded the Palmer Memorial Institute in 1902.  The museum is located at the site of the former school in Sedalia, NC which is approximately 10 miles east of Greensboro, NC.
